Short, plain-language definitions for the RTP, fairness and trading terms used across CS2REF's tools and guides. Each term links back to where it is used in practice.

All terms

RTP (Return to Player)
The share of money wagered that is expected to be returned to players over a large number of plays, expressed as a percentage. It describes a long-run average, not the outcome of a single case opening.
Cash-out RTP
RTP calculated using an item's realistic resale/cash-out market price rather than the platform's own listed price. Usually lower than at-site RTP because platforms often value items above what they resell for.
Profit chance
The probability that a single case opening returns an item worth more than the case cost. A high RTP can still carry a low profit chance if most of the expected value sits in one rare item.
Case ROI (Return on Investment)
The expected percentage gain or loss from opening a case, calculated as (expected item value − case cost) ÷ case cost. A negative Case ROI means the case is a net loss on average.
Provably fair
A verification scheme where a platform publishes a hashed server seed before a roll and reveals it afterward, letting a player confirm the result was not altered after the fact. It proves outcome integrity, not payout value.
Server seed
A secret value generated by the platform before a round, hashed and shown to the player in advance. After the round, the platform reveals the seed so the player can verify the hash matches.
Client seed
A value the player supplies (or that is generated client-side) and combined with the server seed and nonce to produce the final random result, giving the player some influence over — and ability to verify — the outcome.
Ticket range
The numeric range assigned to each possible item in a case, sized proportionally to its drop probability. The combined server/client seed roll lands in one range, determining the result.
House edge
The mathematical advantage retained by the operator, equal to 100% minus RTP. A platform with an 85% RTP case keeps a 15% house edge on average.
Rake
A fee taken by a platform from a specific activity, such as case battles or trades, separate from the base RTP of an individual case.
Wagering requirement (and why CS2REF codes have none)
A condition requiring a bonus or deposit amount to be played through multiple times before it can be withdrawn. Every promo code listed on CS2REF carries no wagering requirement — a code that adds one is not listed here.
Float value
A number between 0.00 and 1.00 encoded on a CS2 skin that determines its wear condition (Factory New through Battle-Scarred) and, indirectly, part of its market price.
Pattern index
A seed value (0–999) that determines a skin's specific visual variant, most consequential on finishes like Case Hardened (blue gems) and Fade (percentage and color spread).
StatTrak™
An optional counter variant of a skin that tracks kills with that weapon, generated at roughly a 10% chance relative to non-StatTrak versions in most cases and commanding a price premium.
Souvenir
A commemorative skin variant dropped only during broadcast Major matches, permanently limited in supply once the event ends.
Trade hold
A Steam-enforced delay (commonly up to several days) placed on items traded to an account without Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled for a set period, or after certain account changes.
KYC (Know Your Customer)
Identity or age verification a platform may require under its own terms or applicable regulation before allowing deposits, withdrawals, or continued account use.

How to use these definitions

  1. 1Read the definition, then check which platforms or tools on CS2REF it applies to.
  2. 2Treat a term as descriptive, not promotional: a definition explains a mechanism, it does not endorse a site.
  3. 3Where a term hides a commercial choice, such as wagering, the definition says so explicitly.
  4. 4If a platform uses a term differently from this glossary, the platform defines its own terms; ask it.
