Doppler is the single most price-stratified finish family in CS2. Every Doppler skin shares the same base material and float distribution, but the visual outcome and price are determined almost entirely by the pattern index, which selects between four standard phases and three to four extremely rare 'gem' phases. Two Doppler Karambits with identical floats can sit five orders of magnitude apart in price simply because one is Phase 3 and the other is Ruby.

The four standard phases

Across nearly every Doppler-eligible finish — knife and weapon — the pattern index is mapped onto Phases 1 through 4 with approximately equal probability. Each phase has a distinctive color palette and pattern that collectors can identify visually:

Standard Doppler phase characteristics
PhaseDominant colorPattern signatureApprox. incidence
Phase 1Pink + magenta + blackHeavy black banding, vivid pink core~25%
Phase 2Pink-purple + blackLess black, more uniform pink-purple~25%
Phase 3Pink + blue + green-tealMixed multi-color, often blue-dominant on knives~25%
Phase 4Pink + green + blackPink with green accents, less common knife appearance~25%
Probabilities are nominal at 25% each among standard phases, conditional on the pattern roll not landing on a gem index. The actual breakdown depends slightly on knife type — some knives skew Phase 2 or Phase 3 by a few percentage points.

Gem phases: Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl, Emerald

The standout outcomes of the Doppler family are the gem phases — solid-color or near-solid-color variants that occupy specific ranges in the pattern index space. On standard Dopplers (Bayonet, M9, Butterfly, Talon, etc.):

Gem phase characteristics on standard Dopplers
Gem phaseDominant colorApprox. incidenceIdentification
RubyDeep solid red~0.5–0.6%Solid red knife with no pink banding
SapphireSolid blue~0.5–0.6%Solid deep blue, distinct from Phase 3 multi-color
Black PearlBlack with iridescent core~0.5–0.6%Mostly black with pearl-like color sheen at center
Probabilities are pattern-index-bucket assignments. Gem phases occupy specific subsets of the pattern index space, which is why their incidence is fixed regardless of float.

The Karambit specifically has a fourth gem phase — Emerald — which does not exist on any other knife. The Emerald is solid green and occupies a narrow pattern index range that produces an even lower incidence than the other Karambit gems:

Karambit Doppler full gem distribution
Gem phaseApprox. incidence (within Karambit Dopplers)
Ruby~0.5%
Sapphire~0.5%
Black Pearl~0.5%
Emerald~0.4%
Total Karambit Doppler gem incidence is approximately 1.9% — meaning approximately 98.1% of Karambit Dopplers are standard Phase 1–4.

Gamma Doppler: a different phase set

Gamma Doppler is a sibling finish family that looks similar to Doppler but uses an entirely different pattern set: Phase 1 through Phase 4 with green/yellow palettes and a single gem phase, Emerald (which exists on more knives than the standard Doppler Emerald). Gamma Doppler Emerald is the most coveted variant among Gamma Dopplers, and the four standard Gamma phases differ from each other primarily in green saturation.

Gamma Doppler phase characteristics
PhaseDominant colorApprox. incidence
Phase 1Green + black + brown~24–26%
Phase 2Green + black with pink hue~24–26%
Phase 3Light green + dark accents~24–26%
Phase 4Green-yellow shifting~24–26%
EmeraldSolid deep green~0.5–0.6%
Gamma Doppler is exclusive to certain knife types (Karambit, M9 Bayonet, Bayonet, Flip, Gut, Huntsman) plus a handful of weapon finishes.

Per-phase pricing multipliers

Across multi-year market data, the per-phase pricing relationship is remarkably stable. Using Phase 4 as the baseline (often the lowest-priced standard phase on most knives):

Empirical Karambit Doppler price multipliers (FN, vs. Phase 4 baseline)
PhaseMultiplier vs. Phase 4 FNNotes
Phase 12.5–3.5×Most-collected standard phase
Phase 21.6–2.0×Second-most desirable standard
Phase 31.0–1.4×Often slightly above Phase 4
Phase 41.0×Reference baseline
Sapphire30–55×Solid blue collectible
Ruby35–65×Solid red collectible
Black Pearl8–15×Lower than Ruby/Sapphire on Karambits
Emerald (Karambit)70–120×Highest-priced Karambit gem in 2025–2026
Multipliers vary by knife type. On Bayonets, Black Pearls historically command higher multipliers than on Karambits. Floats below 0.001 add an additional 30–60% premium on top of the phase multiplier.

Identifying phases without third-party tools

Most reliable phase identification uses dedicated inspection tools, but visual cues can confirm phase identity in many cases:

  • Phase 1: heavy black banding running along blade or weapon body, with vivid pink-magenta dominant.
  • Phase 2: smoother pink-purple gradient, less black banding, more uniform body color.
  • Phase 3: multi-color including blue or teal accents on the cutting edge or barrel — often the most visually distinctive standard phase.
  • Phase 4: pink dominant with green accents at edges; resembles Phase 1 at first glance but lacks the heavy black banding.
  • Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: instantly recognizable as solid colors with no multi-color phase markers — if there is no Phase-1-style banding visible from any angle, it is likely a gem.
  • Black Pearl: looks predominantly dark, with iridescent color shifts visible only at certain viewing angles or with strong lighting.

Float and phase: independent rolls

The phase (pattern index) and float roll are independent. A Ruby Karambit Doppler can be Factory New or Battle-Scarred with the same probability as any other Doppler. The pricing impact, however, is multiplicative: a Battle-Scarred Ruby is significantly more valuable than a Battle-Scarred Phase 4, but less valuable than a Factory New Ruby, because both the gem premium and the float premium apply.

Practical takeaways

  • The four standard Doppler phases each occur in roughly 25% of non-gem rolls.
  • Gems are pattern-index buckets, each at ~0.5% incidence; Karambit Emerald at ~0.4% is the rarest single phase.
  • Phase pricing on Karambit Doppler ranges roughly 1× to 120× between Phase 4 and Emerald.
  • Gamma Doppler is a separate finish with its own phase set; do not conflate Gamma and standard Doppler phases.
  • Phase and float rolls are independent — both compound into final price.

Doppler is the cleanest case study of how a single hidden integer — the pattern index — can stratify an otherwise uniform population into a 100×+ price ladder. The four-phase distribution gives the market enough granularity to support active trading, and the gem layer provides a long-tail collectible bucket that has produced some of the highest single-knife sales recorded. Anyone trading Dopplers should be able to identify a phase from a screenshot, and anyone pricing them should treat phase as the single most important variable after float.
